The Ripple Effect of Keystone Practices

This winter, a small group of folks joined me in taking up a 75 day challenge including some regular habits like drinking 2 liters of water a day. What we noticed (easier on the days we remembered our water bottles!) was that being attentive to one practice often influenced how we approached the whole day—with more intention, patience, and connection to others.

This is the power of a keystone practice. These cornerstone habits act as catalysts, creating ripples that extend far beyond the action itself. When we dedicate time to even one small, meaningful habit—like morning prayer, journaling, or mindful walks in nature—it strengthens other areas of our lives, from our relationships to our sense of purpose.

As we begin a new year, it’s an opportunity to ask yourself: What keystone practice might I renew or reclaim? Perhaps it’s as simple as returning to a favorite ritual that once brought clarity or peace. Or, it might mean trying something new—something that speaks to who you are right now.

Wood & Water Retreats is one form of support ready to support you in finding and deepening these life-giving habits. We'll keep rolling out times and spaces to reflect on what grounds you alongside a community of others seeking inspiration to sustain the practices that matter most.

This January, begin again with one small step. Your keystone practice could be the spark that transforms not just your day, but your year.

P.S. If solitude or spiritual direction is among the practices you would like to begin or renew, plan now to join the Spring or Fall extended retreat.
